Don’t worry, I didn’t die!

Hello everyone,

I know some of you are anxiously awaiting news from me here in Korea, so I just wanted to let you all know that I’m doing well and I’m adjusting to my life here reasonably well. I haven’t had a lot of time to actually sit down and type stuff yet, but hopefully with some careful planning I will soon. I’ve been meeting a lot of new people, having lots of new experiences and have been getting used to living not only in Daegu but more importantly a dormitory. It’s taking a lot of adjusting and compromises, and I’m definitely not getting enough sleep, but I’m doing my best and I’m enjoying every day so far.

Here’s a quick look at my desk, that I’ve already changed a bit to make it feel more hospitable instead of this generic Ikea-colored thing it is:

Also, here’s a picture of all the KGSP scholars of the Daegu area from the opening ceremony last week:

Yeah…there’s a lot of us.

Keimyung University is pretty huge. Just walking off campus takes about 20-30 minutes so it’s not always easy to go somewhere, but it is one of the most beautiful campuses in Korea so I’m quite glad I ended up here.

Next time I’ll tell you guys all about what I’ve been doing and I’ll show you my beautiful campus.
I’m not sure when next time will be, but I’ll try to make it as soon as possible!

      Succes!

One of the things I love about Korea compared to the Netherlands is how people still visit actual, physical stores here. While in my country, cities struggle keeping their downtown shopping areas from looking like ghost towns, here there is a healthy variety in both local mom and pop stores, big franchise chains and everything in between.

There's even megamalls like this one, called #Garden5, that we couldn't even imagine finding back at home. 4 huge buildings with 14 floors of shopping each, in an area that doesn't even come close to the foot traffic that regular downtown areas see - I don't know how places like this stay in business, but I'm very happy they do.

The best thing about teaching in Korea is how adorable the kids are, even though they can also be little demons, and how surprised they get when they find out you speak Korean.

I don't want to sound like an old fart, but I sure do wish we'd have had books like this when I was studying English - it certainly beats the 800th 'Trip to London' practice dialogue.

Winters in Korea are always cold, but since there generally isn't much precipitation, it doesn't usually snow all that often. This year, however, has seen about 7 days of snow already and with all these cold snaps, we can probably look forward to a couple more before the winter finally gives up.

This is the third year that I've been in Seoul enough to closely follow all the major Starcraft tournaments, and although I still really miss Proleague I guess it is better for my productivity that we've only got two major tournaments going on these days. If February rolls around without any SSL announcements, I might get antsy though..
